We have designed and
built a viscometer to measure the viscosity of liquid metals, for instance
aluminium or die-casting alloys, up to 800°C. This is now offered for
general use with details to be agreed for your particular research requirement.
For instance: this instrument has been provided with stainless steel
rotors and stators which are pre-oxidised to prevent adhesion of the liquid
metal. However we could use any material you wish to specify, for instance
graphite is excellent under these conditions, though the operating protocol
would have to ensure that the normal gas (argon) blanket was maintained as
necessary. The rotor and stator are grooved longitudinally asthis was required
by the original customer. This grooving can be omitted or made to your own
requirements. The rotor can be raised out of the heating chamber by raising the
measurement head.
The stator is lowered from the bottom of the heating
chamber which remains fixed in the centre of the mounting pillar. Heating is by
radiation from a surounding vertically mounted muffle. Structural cooling,
where necessary, is by circulated water, of which a flow of about 1 litre per
minute is sufficient.
The gas blanket is split into two parts, a
constantly flowing blanket sufficient to prevent oxidation (samples of molten
aluminium have been maintained bright over a period of two hours or more) and a
much heavier flow which is passed through channels provided in the structure of
the steel in order to cool the samples at a high rate on demand. |

Such details, or
others, can be arranged with the purchaser. Obviously such instruments are
built only to order, though certain sub-units such as the measurement head and
the electronic control unit are standard items built for normal production.
General purpose software for speed control, temperature control and for
torque measurement is provided to run on your own computer or we can provided a
suitably configured PC if required. Major variations such as Couette geometry
(rotating outer cylinder) are also possible. We welcome your enquiries. . |
